Buttons are sometimes used in counselling. This comes from Gestalt Therapy.
The counsellor invites the client to choose a button to represent themselves. The client is then invited to choose buttons for anyone who is significant in their life (positively/negatively, past/present). The counsellor then notices aspects of the buttons, such as colour, size, texture and where the buttons are in relation to each other and the client is able to think and talk about their own personal meaning of this.
Sometimes if we are asked how we feel we are unsure. Using buttons (without thinking too hard about why we are choosing them) allows us to temporarily switch off our logic and tap into our unconscious feelings. The buttons are like a stepping stone into the unconscious. The more consciously aware we are, the more in control we feel.
